Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Nollywood, Nigeria's film industry, has long been a powerful medium for educating and influencing public opinion. Civic responsibility, which includes awareness of rights and duties, participation in governance, and social accountability, is crucial for national development. Nollywood films have the potential to promote these values, as they often address issues of governance, corruption, and social justice (Okafor & Oko, 2023). In Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, where the majority of the population is actively involved in political and civic affairs, this study aims to assess how Nollywood films impact the promotion of civic responsibility.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While Nollywood films have a significant impact on Nigerian society, there is limited research on their role in promoting civic responsibility in rural communities such as Karu. This study seeks to understand whether Nollywood films have successfully promoted civic awareness and participation in governance (Adebayo & Bello, 2023).
1.3 Objectives of the Study
- To assess the portrayal of civic responsibility in Nollywood films.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of Nollywood films in promoting civic responsibility in Karu Local Government Area.
- To explore how Nollywood films influence the behavior and attitudes of the residents towards their civic duties.
1.4 Research Questions
- How do Nollywood films portray civic responsibility?
- To what extent have Nollywood films influenced civic responsibility in Karu Local Government Area?
- What is the relationship between Nollywood film consumption and civic participation in Karu?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
- Nollywood films have a positive influence on the promotion of civic responsibility in Karu Local Government Area.
- Increased exposure to Nollywood films is correlated with greater civic participation and awareness in Karu.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the role of films as tools for social change, particularly in promoting civic responsibility. The findings will be useful for filmmakers, policymakers, and community leaders who are interested in harnessing the power of media to foster social engagement and responsibility.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the impact of Nollywood films on promoting civic responsibility within Karu Local Government Area. A limitation is the potential bias in respondents who may be more influenced by other factors (e.g., political campaigns or community leaders) than by films.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
- Nollywood Films: Films produced in the Nigerian movie industry, primarily in English, covering various genres and themes.
- Civic Responsibility: The duty of individuals to engage in societal matters, including voting, paying taxes, and adhering to the rule of law.
- Karu Local Government Area: A region in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, where issues related to governance and civic engagement are prevalent.
